Obama has a crush on Obama

I am actually trying to avoid to post any diary since June,
but today I bent my rule just to direct your attention to somebody's else article.
In today's Boston Globe's editorial, named very funny:
"The audacity of ego", columnist Joan Vennochi pointed to
the one of the Obama's weakest property: narcissism, see
http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/editor ial_opinion/oped/articles/2008/07/20/the _audacity_of_ego?mode=PF

"A convention hall isn't good enough for the presumptive Democratic nominee.
He plans to deliver his acceptance speech in the 75,000 seat stadium where the Denver Broncos play.
Before a vote is cast, he's embarking on a foreign policy tour that will use cheering Europeans - and America's top news anchors - as extras in his campaign.
What do you expect from a candidate who already auditioned a quasi-presidential seal with the Latin inscription,
"Vero possumus" - "Yes, we can"?

Obama finds criticism of his wife "infuriating" and doesn't want either of them to be the target of satire.
Tell that to the Carters, the Reagans, the Clintons, and the Bushes, father and son.

There's no such thing as a humble politician.
But when Obama looks into the mirror, he doesn't just see a president; he sees JFK."

In 1960, John F. Kennedy accepted his party's nomination with an outdoor speech at the Los Angeles Coliseum.
But he waited until he was elected before going to Germany to declare "Ich bin ein Berliner."

"In February, a blogger for the left-embracing Mother Jones commented on his uneasiness over the candidate's messianic complex: "Does this post play unhelpfully into the pernicious and growing Obamaism-as-cult . . . that we'll likely see repeated over and over by the right wing if Obama gets the nomination?" blogged Jonathan Stein.

"It does. Sorry. But Obama's rhetoric makes an undeniable suggestion: that his election, not an eight-year administration that successfully implements his vision for America, would represent a moment in America of the grandest, most transformative kind. And that's a bit much," Stein wrote.

Original Boston Globe editorial opinion is here:

People like him. Deal with it. (2.00 / 5)

As we try to roll down the cult road again here (haven't used it since February), all I see are the bitter rantings of the deadenders -- Obama's policy has never demonstrated ego or narcissism; there's no America first and Imperialism, no refusal to ask for shared sacrifice.

It's amusing how once we finally have a confident and popular nominee, some liberals are terrified as much as the GOP. It's like these liberals don't know what to do with a good thing once they have it.

Re: Obama has a crush on Obama (2.00 / 9)

This is a deeply childish diary. Most succesful politicians have big egos and Obama complains about the Republican news machine sliming his wife with a tissue of lies. In my book that doesn't make him a narcissist it makes him a gentleman. A concept largely alien to today's conservatives who used to be the standard bearers for proper behavior. Just assume the diarist is a Republican stooge or an idiot and his comments make entire sense.

This is Amazing (2.00 / 3)

Could you be any more puerile? You could possibly write diaries wondering about positions and policies, but instead, you write a diary about how he chooses to use a large stadium to give his acceptance speech?

As far that stadium, oh no, it MUST be just for his ego. It couldn't possibly be to open up his speech to more people and not just press and delegates? To let the actual convention hall be not so crowded?

As far as his wife, rage? He said firmly he didn't want his wife being attacked. Where's the rage in that? And what husband would NOT defend his wife?

You are picking at every little thing hoping to do what? Convince people he is not the nominee? Or that he shouldn't be? Based on him choosing a stadium and defending his wife?

You've entered into the silliest of games. This is well beyond the pale and you've reduced yourself to schoolyard taunts.

Congratulations. You have a troll diary.

Re: oh.... (2.00 / 1)

Fair enough.

Minor spoiler alert for those who haven't seen The Dark Knight, turn away now
I have thoroughly admonished someone I know who decided to have a "girls' night out" at Mamma Mia instead of The Dark Knight. I now understand the Ledger Oscar buzz, since he did such a quality job with all the little things beyond "acting crazy". The ending was only decent to meh, mostly because I didn't want it to end.

My final prognosis was that it was excellent, but it didn't live up to expectations since it was supposed to be the greatest movie ever made, bring peace to the Middle East and cure cancer. By far the best superhero movie. Close to being in the conversation for one of the greatest ever, except the feel-good-about-people, feel-good-about-heroes, end-on-a-poignant-note ending took a bit away.

Although, I have to ask... As someone who browses these pages and sees how the mainstream media manipulates stories, did you laugh when you saw the news anchor with the "Batman dead?" banner at the bottom when they immediately followed that with footage that showed a guy answering the question "Are you Batman?" with a "No"? Outside of the pencil trick, that was probably the funniest joke and I'm probably the only one in my theater who got it.
End minor spoiler

Re: oh.... (2.00 / 3)

yes - i laughed at that part too.  i liked the movie - but thought the first one was WAY better (and it was a little too long).  that said - the acting was awesome - and ledger was stellar (oscar-worthy) in the role.

just an FYI about the ending (w/o giving anything away)  you know when they both fall - my husband thinks they both survive - i disagree...  who's right?

Progressive Democratic Newsletter

Here is also my personal recipe for Easy Heart Attack Chicken Alfredo

1 lbs of boneless chicken breasts
1 quart light cream
2and1/2 sticks of butter
1/2 garlic clove, minced
1 bottle Parmesan cheese
1 lbs fettuccine

Sauce:

Poor light cream into sauce pan and put over low heat. Don't let boil. Add butter (chopped up may work, but up to you). Let simmer until all butter is melted. Add parmesan cheese until sauce becomes thick and creamy. Keep simmering until ready to serve.

Chicken:

Add chicken and a small bit of water to pan. Add italian seasoning to taste and minced garlic. Keep on medium heat until chicken is fully cooked and slightly brown.

Fettuccine:

Just boil until done. Not too hard. Al Dente is best (firm and sproingy).

Mix chicken and sauce. Either mix with fettuccine or just serve on top.

Everyone I made this for has nearly died from joy at the taste. It really is a nice dish. But don't have too much, it is very filling and hearty!

It's very rich. But everyone I know loves it. At least when I make it. It's pretty creamy/cheesy. So I would say it is good.

Quatro Formaggi (2.00 / 4)

If you like cheesy pasta then the best dish is quatro  formaggi, the four cheese dish.

You can select any four cheeses but my recommendation is

1. One Hard cheese - Parmesan or equivalent

  1. One Cream cheese - Mozzarella will do
  2. One Blue cheese - preferable Gorgonzola
  3. One medium hard cheese - here I go all French and use something like a Beaufort

Boil the pasta, my favourite is Penne, to al dente. Grate the cheeses. Drain the pasta but reserve a little of the water. Warm the dry bowl with a bit of olive oil, put half the grated cheese in, then the pasta, then the rest of the cheese, and then a spoonful of the reserved water to prevent the cheese from clumping as you stir.

Serve with a salad. Garnish with a few capers if you like, occasionally some walnuts. Wash down with plenty of full bodied reds. The Italians would go for Chianti or a Montepulciano, but for me it has to be a Bordeaux if it's cheese.

Hope that helps with the cheesy pasta

I'm working on a few mixed drinks for my party (2.00 / 4)

I'm throwing a party on election night and here's some of the custom cocktails I'm making.

The "Bittergate" is going to consist of Rye Whiskey (which originated in Pennsylvania), Angostura Bitters, and Grapefruit juice, though I'm still playing with proportion; I'll let you guys know when I've got it right.

The "Straight-Talk Express" will be three successive shooters: Straight Gin (followed by a bite of orange), Straight Tequila (followed by a bite of lime), and Straight Bourbon (followed by a bite of lemon). It's guaranteed to make your stomach flip flop.

P.U.M.A. stands for Prune Ume Midori Absolut! It is a group of liquors dedicated to one cause this NOvember: Nosober. 1/2 oz Prunejuice, 1 oz plumbwine, 1/2 oz Midori Melon, 2 oz Absolut Currant (or regular Absolut if the sugar overload is too much).

Is this why he misspeaks? (1.00 / 1)

I have a theory about his misspeaking -- that he is so narcissistic that he does not realize his words affect others.

Jake Tapper this afternoon wrote this about Obama's careless use of words:

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/ 2008/07/barack-obamas-b.html#comments

Today on CBS's Face the Nation, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., in Afghanistan, told the paparazzi-pursued correspondent Lara Logan that "the objective of this trip was to have substantive discussions with people like President Karzai or Prime Minister Maliki or President Sarkozy or others who I expect to be dealing with over the next eight to 10 years.

The notion that Obama will be dealing with world leaders for eight-to-ten years, possibly up through July 2018, suggests that either (a) he believes that not only will he be elected and re-elected, but the 22nd amendment will be repealed and he will be elected for a third term, OR (b) he was speaking casually and just meant two terms.

Is this like the 57 states?  LOL.

Is it inexperience or lack of empathy that leads him into these gaffes?:

Some Democratic allies of Obama's are -- off the record -- concerned that the senator too often doesn't consider the potential butterfly effect of his diction.

Take his support for an "undivided Jerusalem,"  or his remarks about women seeking abortions when they're "feeling blue," which upset feminist leaders.

Or the media kerfuffle after his "refine my policies" presser.

On his press plane on July 5, after that incident, Obama said, "I'm surprised at how finely calibrated every single word was measured."

A reporter noted that that is precisely what happens with the president, he can change world affairs with one word, finely calibrating your words is what happens.

Is that why he chose to deliver a major campaign speech on foreign soil, in front of not one but TWO inappropriate monuments?

The Audacity of Whining (2.00 / 3)

That should be the title of Joan Vennochi's column.

So Barack Obama is choosing to give his acceptance speech before 75,000 fans?  Ego?  I think not.  The first rule of politics is that you do things which your opponent cannot do.  There's no way John McCain, a great American, could fill up 75,000 seats at a convention.

Just imagine this, as Mark Shields described it:

At the stadium in Denver, that the film of the idealized memories of Robert and John Kennedy fills the screen, and then comes Ted Kennedy slowly walking to the microphone, and says, "The torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans. I give you the senator from Illinois."

This is what makes Barack Obama's candidacy unique.

McCain can't give a speech in Germany illustrating America would be more respected in the world under his presidency than under Barack Obama's, so why shouldn't Obama go there?

Campaigns are about differences.  Barack Obama is trying to underscore them.

Any comment on Mullen? (1.00 / 1)

The Wash Post says today:  "The nation's senior military official warned against a plan, put forward by presumptive Democratic nominee Sen. Barack Obama, to remove all U.S. troops from Iraq by early 2010."  (as I've pointed out in other posts, that date keeps changing, and really has never had any reference point other than the date the proposal was made, i.e., military situation).

"I think the consequences could be very dangerous," Adm. Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Narcissism kills soldiers.

Didn't you learn that from George Bush?

Hey engles! (2.00 / 6)

Nice to see you back, you big crazy socialist, you! ;~)

While I disagree with both you and Ms. Vennochi that Sen. Obama has succumbed to ego, it is true that it is a risk that he has to be cognizant of.  I think he's more than aware of the dynamic of having lots of folks tell you how wonderful you are and will be able to do as well as could be hoped to stay grounded.

Joan Vennochi was a hardcore supporter of Sen. Clinton's primary run and has had lots of harsh things to say about Sen. Obama in the past, so like many folks it isn't surprising that she is still at it.

This will be a mantra of the GOP to use against us, so you and Joan are in your own way helping.  Everyone should be cautious about getting too enthusiastic about the capabilities of another person.  Darian Dauchan says it well enough that I'll put that up here again;

"Because you know as well as I do that great people with good intentions have lost their souls in the process.  Fighting for freedom but in the end settling for power.  But we're a needy people.  See we demand so much from our leaders we forget they are human beings, placed on pedestals so high no mere mortal can reach them.  Longing for saints when all we really want is someone to aspire to be like."

Want me to blow your mind?

Recced.
